North West Region (NWR)

The North West Region comprises of four Northern states of Jammu & Kashmir, Punjab, Haryana , Himanchal Pradesh and the Union Territory of Chandigarh. There are income tax offices at 69 different stations in the entire region. The Chief Commissioner of Income Tax(CCIT), Chandigarh is the Cadre Controlling Chief Commissioner with Chandigarh as Headquarters. The whole area is administered by five Chief Commissioners based at Chandigarh, Ludhiana, Panchkula, Amritsar & Shimla. The Investigation Wing of the department in North West region is headed by the Director General of Income Tax(Inv), Chandigarh, with headquarters in Panchkula. In this region there are eighteen sanctioned posts of Administrative Commissioners (CsIT) and one Commissioner (Central) besides eleven Commissioners of Income Tax (Appeals). Two Directors of Income Tax(Inv) function under the administrative control of DGIT(Inv). Chandigarh region consists of three Administrative Commissioners.Two CsIT are based at Chandigarh and one at Patiala. Two Appellate Commissioners are posted at Chandigarh & Patiala. Commissioner (Computer Operations) Chandigarh, is responsible for implementation of computerization initiatives of the department in NWR. Commissioner (ITAT) at Chandigarh posted as Sr. Authorised Representative in the ITAT, Chandigarh along with his team represents the department before the two functional benches of Appellate Tribunal. Commissioner (CIB) Chandigarh monitors the work of collection and analysis of information from the various specified sources, which may be of use in the detection of tax evasion. Direct Taxes Regional Training Institute (DTRTI), Chandigarh headed by a Commissioner caters to in house service training needs of all the cadres of the department in this region.. In this region there are sanctioned posts of 73 Joint/Additional Commissioners, 137 Assistant/Deputy Commissioners, 313 Income Tax Officers, 645 Inspectors of Income Tax and other officers and members of Staff. Central Revenue Building, Chandigarh houses the offices of CCIT (NWR),Chd., CIT (CO) & CIT(A) while many other offices function from hired buildings. The department has purchased a piece of land in Sector 17, Chandigarh for the construction of the office building. Total revenue collection of NWR for the financial year 2004-05 was Rs. 4,235 crores. Collection targets fixed for the year 2005-06 for this region is to the tune of Rs. 5,686 crores and out of this overall target, CCIT, Chandigarh region has been allotted a target of Rs. 1,300 crores. To achieve this target, an expenditure of Rs. 8.29 crores on salaries and other establishment expenses of the department is likely to be incurred.

Central Revenue Building, Chandigarh houses the offices of CCIT (NWR), Chandigarh, CIT(CO), CIT(TDS), CIT(Audit) & Income Tax Ombudsman   while many other offices function from hired buildings. The department had purchased a piece of land in Sector 17 Chandigarh for the construction of the office building which is near completion.
